We had a customer in recently who wanted to have 2 wireless networks in his home. One for him and one for the kids.
His logic? His kids, given the opportunity, would sit up all night on their ipods/iPads/Notebooks and watch Youtube or chat online to their friends. They would get little sleep and be predictably cranky the next day.
He didn’t want to turn the wireless internet off because he needed to be able to work later at night.
The solution?
A trick wireless modem router that has built in software to let you manage 2 wireless networks. There are a heap of routers that we can recommend, but we typically recommend Asus products. They are good quality, have an excellent warranty (usually 3 years), and have a much easier setup process than many of their competitors. The Asus DSL-N66U has the necessary parental controls required along with a host of other trickery that will let you do things you havent even thought possible! Read more here
So what do you do when you have the right hardware?
It’s a matter of creating 2 different wireless networks in your home with the Asus software. This is relatively straightforward (but of course, if you get stuck we are more than happy to do it for you!).
One wireless network for the adults – with it’s own password. One wireless network for the kids – with it’s own password. Then configure the kids wireless network to only operate within set hours of the day.
So maybe 9pm is the internet shut down time in your house!? Easy! Just set the wireless network to disable from 9pm. It can then automatically turn back on at whatever time you choose the next day.
